The Tail of Athena

By Laurie Phillips

Athena the Great Dane was found in a neighboring town – a kind stranger saw her, coaxed her into her car and brought her to us. We were shocked at her condition when she came in. She was severely malnourished and had terribly swollen joints, and sores all over her body. She was also heartworm positive and had separation anxiety. We could tell that she was going to need a lot of love and care.

Despite all of these concerns, we soon learned what a love bug she is – friendly with all who met her and a giant lapdog, if she could be. She loved to give kisses – mouth wide open, eyes closed in anticipation of sharing her love. We should have named her “Venus….”

Athena’s skin and joints improved with a healthy diet. At MHS, we spayed her and treated her for heartworm. Most importantly, perhaps, Athena received a lot of love and attention here at the Adoption Center, even going on frequent sleepovers at various staff members’homes.

Thanks to your continued support, Athena is now spending the holidays with her new family who have promised not to feed her too much turkey as, ironically, she now needs to lose a few pounds! We hope you will make a significant gift so our work with animals like Athena can continue. Donors like  you make all the difference for our community’s animals.

As we approach the end of the calendar  year and you are considering giving, we hope you will consider a gift to MHS!

Thank you, and we wish  you a very Happy Holiday Season!
