Objective: The aim of this training is to assist educators and volunteers in learning how to implement the RedRover Readers Program curriculum in classrooms, libraries, or homes. This program is designed to promote empathy, self-awareness, and social awareness among children aged 5-11 by encouraging them to connect with the world and the animals in it. Each lesson seeks to increase an understanding of animals, clarify what our responsibilities are toward animals in society, and promote empathy and respect.

Learning Outcomes

*At the conclusion of this training, participants will be able to:

*Understand the “The Link” between human and animal well-being and why learning and talking about animals matters

*Understand the connection between stories and social and emotional learning (SEL)

* Use open-ended, non-leading questions to elicit “whole brain thinking” and learn the three steps of empathy

*Demonstrate neutrality and non-judgment to create a safe learning atmosphere

*Model effective listening by repeating back and clarifying students’ responses

*Recognize stories and questions as useful tools in developing empathy

*Begin to familiarize themselves with students’ emotional reactions and attitudes about animals and their person experiences

*Gain a basic understanding of how trauma impacts the brain, how to use Trauma Informed Care (TIC) principles when interacting with those who may have experienced trauma, and how interactions with animals may help in the recovery of trauma

*Become familiar with some of the 18 books and guides used in the program

*Share this flier with others who may want to join you!
