As we prepare to celebrate 150 years of dedication, compassion, and life-saving work at Monadnock Humane Society, we want to share the story of a dog whose journey of resilience has been nothing short of miraculous.
Meet Karma. Karma is a sweet and brave dog, who came into our care last year after our team received evidence that she was suffering greatly and in dire need of medical attention. Our staff worked with local law enforcement to seize her from her owner so we could provide critical care.
When Karma arrived, she was in horrific shape. She was wearing a t-shirt that was soaked in blood and a cone that was covered in both blood and grime. Her back, chest, legs, neck, and ears were all raw and bleeding. She had no fur on her back, from her shoulders to her tail. Her ears were badly infected, and her legs and feet were inflamed. She had cuts, scratches, and scabs all over her body. It was evident that Karma was in pain. She was even self-mutilating to try to alleviate some of the painful discomfort she was enduring.
After carefully and gently evaluating her condition, our medical team swiftly created a plan to get Karma comfortable and on a journey of healing. You can see in the pictures here of how she looked when she arrived at MHS. It was evident that Karma would need a safe home to stay in on her path to recovery. Our team found her a loving foster family who embraced her with open arms as we advocated for the best possible outcome for Karma.
Karma’s foster family shared that, at first, she was wary and pacing restlessly in their home. But with patience and care, she slowly began to trust them and started healing. They followed our medical team’s care plan precisely and it was successful! Karma’s condition started to improve and the family soon noticed her loving nature and goofy personality – she was even wagging her tail in her sleep out of happiness. They fell in love with her joyful wiggles and began affectionately calling her “Princess Wigglebutt”.
Our Humane Agent, Beth, worked tirelessly with law enforcement and the prosecutor to ensure this treatment would not be allowed to happen again. Beth made powerful statements, testified, and provided ample evidence to the court and judge to show that Karma’s deplorable condition was avoidable and was the result of owner neglect. Karma’s previous owner was found guilty, lost custody of Karma, and received a pet ownership ban. This was a major victory for our team and the animals in our community.
After just over a full year in our care, Karma was finally able to be adopted! We were overjoyed when her foster family decided to keep Karma and give her a forever home. Her adoption day was an emotional day for all. You can see pictures below of Karma completely healed and having a joyful reunion with our staff – sharing plenty of her famous wiggles!
Karma now spends her days with a full coat of fur, pain-free, rolling around in the grass, and receiving the care she needs. Her new family even makes special treats for her, so they don’t trigger her allergies. She goes on trips, has doggy play dates, and absolutely loves boat rides!
Karma’s journey from pain to happiness would not have been possible without the compassionate support of our community and the transformative power of your donations. This holiday season, please consider extending your kindness to these vulnerable animals by making a donation to Monadnock Humane Society. Your generosity will help us continue our life-saving work and bring comfort and joy to animals in need. The compassion of our community has always been a source of hope and change for our furry friends, and this year, we need your support more than ever.
Thank you for your consideration and commitment to creating a world where animals are treated with kindness and respect. Together, we can provide a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves.
