Celebrating 150 Years Of Compassion

Join Us in Celebrating Our Legacy and Looking Toward a Bright Future!

Intro

As we mark the 150th anniversary of Monadnock Humane Society, we reflect on the powerful legacy that has shaped who we are today. A recent tribute—delivered during the presentation of a local Nonprofit of the Year award—beautifully captured both our history and the impact we continue to make.

In the words of historian and NH Humanities speaker Jennifer Carroll, who has extensively researched humane societies and the life of Jennie B. Powers, an early local agent for animal welfare:

“A stallion named Bambi helped launch a new chapter in the life of a vital organization in the Monadnock Region, one that now spans 150 years.”

From that pivotal moment in 1964, when a neglected Morgan horse sparked a community movement, to today—where our organization touches the lives of over 7,000 animals annually—Monadnock Humane Society remains rooted in compassion, innovation, and community care.

We invite you to explore our history, learn about the milestones that brought us here, and join us in celebrating 150 years of making a difference—for animals, and for the people who love them.

How We’re Celebrating:

A Special Logo

We’ve launched a special 150th anniversary logo to honor our history and look ahead to an even brighter future for animals in need. Keep an eye out for it all year long as we commemorate this incredible milestone!

Main Street Banners

Beginning in late June and lasting through July, as you stroll down or drive through the heart of charming Main Street in Keene, you’ll be greeted by something truly special—our 150th anniversary banners. Designed to celebrate this incredible milestone, each banner proudly features our commemorative logo alongside the faces of beloved animals who found their forever homes through MHS. It’s a tribute to their journeys, and to the community that’s helped make 150 years of love and second chances possible.

150th Adoption

Meet Eggroll, a sweet and lovable cat who found his forever home as our 150th adoption of the year! We couldn’t be happier for him and his new best friend! Celebrating alongside them is our adorable 150th anniversary cat stuffed animal—featured in the photo and created in partnership with Douglas Cuddle Toys. It’s part of a limited-edition trio that also includes a dog and bunny, all available for purchase at MHS while supplies last. A perfect keepsake for a purrfect adoption story!

Limited Edition Gear

Show your love for MHS with exclusive limited edition gear featuring our special 150th anniversary logo! Thanks to the incredible team at Beez Tees, we have an online store where you can grab your favorite items and wear your support wherever you go!

Walk Through History

We’re bringing our story to the community with 12 signs highlighting key milestones in MHS history. The walk will debut in early July with displays at participating Main Street businesses—alongside our commemorative street banners—before moving to the trails at MHS later this summer. Take a stroll through time and see how far we’ve come!

150th Timeline

Take a walk through history with us! As part of our 150th anniversary celebration, we’ve created a special timeline that highlights the milestones, moments, and memories that have shaped MHS over the years. It’s a journey through our legacy of compassion—and we’re just getting started!

Monadnock Humane Society Day

Join us on June 28th at MHS for a special event commemorating our 150th anniversary! This meaningful celebration will include the debut of our History Walk signs, a road sign dedication, a display of MHS historical items from the Cheshire Historical Society, and official proclamations recognizing MHS at both the city and state level—featuring remarks from the Mayor of Keene and a NH State Representative. Enjoy light refreshments, community, and a look back at 150 years of compassion, care, and connection. We can’t wait to celebrate with you!

In celebration of our 150th Anniversary, we are thrilled to share this special interview with documentary filmmaker Ken Burns. After rescuing two dogs that had been abandoned near their office in Walpole, NH, members of Ken’s staff volunteered to help put together this video during their free time. Vermont musician Dana Robinson then graciously allowed his music to be used free of charge. It was made at no cost to us, and we are deeply grateful to everyone involved. Take a moment to watch, and let this inspiring story move you. We couldn’t be more excited to share it with you!
