Rehome a Pet

At MHS, we recognize that there are many reasons a family may need to consider rehoming their pet. We’re here to offer support every step of the way—whether you need resources to help you keep your pet or assistance in transitioning them to a loving new home. Our goal is to ensure the best outcome for both you and your pet.

Steps to take before surrendering your pet:

  • MHS Services
  • Rehoming options that keep animals out of shelters:
    • PetFinder (petfinder.com): A resource to find animal rescues in your immediate area.
  • Post on Social Media:
    • Seek out friends, family, neighbors through your social network to find a family looking for a new pet.
    • Take a great photo of your pet that highlights their personality.
    • Utilize local social media, such as NextDoor, that connects you with neighbors who may be looking for a new companion.
  • Community Resources:
    • Set up flyers with information at local veterinary clinics, pet supply stores, grooming facilities, and other community spots where people visit. Flyers should have a nice picture, a brief description about the pet’s personality, and health status (spayed/neutered, vaccines).
  • Are you surrendering because of a behavior concern?
    • If it’s a cat behavior concern, please call (603) 352-9011.
    • If it’s a dog behavior concern, please reach out to our training center here.
  • Experiencing Financial Difficulties
    • MHS offers low cost spay/neuter services for cats, wellness clinics for low-income households, and a pet food pantry for cats and dogs.
